TruckWeek industry issues survey

The ATA will use TruckWeek to launch a major online industry issues survey, to enable operators to provide feedback about:

  • their business practices and performance;
  • the regulatory and business issues affecting the industry;
  • where the ATA should be concentrating its efforts.

Check the TruckWeek website during TruckWeek for the link to the survey, or subscribe to the ATA’s regular updates here.

The ATA will use the results of the survey to support its arguments on behalf of the industry and to help guide its plans for the future. The results will be presented at the 2010 Australian Trucking Convention, which will be held on the Gold Coast from 7-10 April. Convention delegates will be able to discuss the results in a special two-hour industry parliament. You can sign up for the convention now at www.ataevents.net.au.

Parliament House delegation program

On 24 and 25 February, the ATA will lead a delegation of elected industry representatives to meet Government ministers, Opposition shadow ministers and other parliamentarians to talk about the trucking industry’s priority issues, including:

  • road safety;
  • infrastructure spending;
  • regulatory reforms to boost the industry’s productivity;
  • the review of Australia’s future tax system; and
  • climate change.

The delegation program will deliver strong messages to Australia’s political leaders about these issues, and will show that the industry truly speaks with one voice about its concerns.

The ATA will host a special briefing breakfast for MPs and Senators at Parliament House on 25 February as part of the delegation program.

At the breakfast, the Manager of Industry Affairs and Customer Relations at NTI, Owen Driscoll, will brief the MPs and Senators about the results of NTI’s research into the causes of truck crashes. Mr Driscoll’s briefing will dispel the myths about truck crashes and will put forward strong recommendations on how governments and the industry can improve road safety.

National road safety advertising campaign

ATA member organisation NatRoad will run a series of TV advertisements in TruckWeek, to urge motorists to share the road safely with trucks.

The advertisements will focus on three key points that motorists need to remember when they drive near heavy vehicles:

  • trucks are up to 50 times heavier than cars, so they take longer to stop. Do not cut in front of trucks or drive too close behind them. At the same time, it’s vital that truck drivers do not drive too close behind the car in front.
  • do not attempt to pass a turning truck on the left, because trucks are legally allowed to use the whole width of the road to turn.
  • stay in view: if you can’t see the rear vision mirrors on a truck, the truck driver can’t see you.

NatRoad developed the advertisements in partnership with Kenworth and Kenworth dealers. They will run as community service ads on the Prime network.
